This is my biggest complaint about what the democratic party has done nationally, they threw a ton of our money back at broken business models. The conditions that exist today make it advantageous to run a small business. Its easier to ship goods now, internet infrastructure exists now where work can be done almost anywhere at any time and with a little help from the Oregon Health plan, working for small businesses could be a very advantageous proposition for the unemployed. I'm also of the opinion that small business is more efficient in some ways than larger firms. The reasoning here is an assumption that in larger firms, management costs are a higher proportion of total costs than in a small business. Finally, large firms are failing at an alarming rate. Our world is ripe for innovation and this state has been lacking true innovation for quite awhile. Use state money to a)create infrastructure for the businesses of tomorrow (wet labs, fiber optic internet etc.) and b) fund the start up of well planned companies.
If biology has taught me anything its that systems are more stable when there are many components competing for the same role.

Small business, businesses that are wanting to move to Oregon and business startups. Entrepreneurs need more assistance than the SBA, give them more assistance and treat them better, I guarantee you will have a better state to market to other businesses looking to start up or relocate.

My partners and I have had a small business since 2001. One of the things that has helped us most, but is also something we need help with most is maximizing our internet findability. We spent far too much money on a trial and error approach and we still aren't happy with the results. Having more resources to advice small businesses on internet strategies would be enormously helpful in this economy.

This is a very important question. The idea of helping small businesses isn't new but it's one we need to act on much more vigorously. We all recognize that most of the jobs created in Oregon are created by small and medium sized businesses, so the question is what can we do to assist them today? Well I think there are two things.
1) Developing creative ways to give them access to capital, which is a huge problem for small businesses right now particularly with the community banking crisis - where community banks are having difficulty making those small loans because of higher federal asset requirements. Being very creative and making a high priority of accessing capital for small and medium businesses is essential and will be one of my top priorities as governor.
2) Recognizing that its not just capital that many of these small businesses need. Some of them need access to business technical information such as accounting. They also need access to sophisticated market information and sophisticated business networks to help them reach the outside world with their goods and their products. Both of these can be supplied by the State but also by the State helping create opportunities for other small businesses and entrepreneurs that have that technical information to make it readily available to small businesses that need it.
